We have just started a new trade related project in Djibouti. The purpose of the project is to assist the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in preparing a National Trade Development Strategy.
The need for such a comprehensive strategy has arisen from the fact that Djibouti's services exports are insufficient to cover the country’s goods imports, resulting in a substantial and growing trade deficit. The Government of Djibouti has therefore embarked on a number of measures to strengthen exports, including accession to the COMESA free trade area, creation of free zones, establishment of an investment promotion agency, and the negotiation of preferential trade agreements with its main trade partners. The trade development strategy will provide a coherent framework for these activities.
